Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press

Founded in 1979, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press (SFLEP hereafter) is a national top-tier publishing house superintended by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and based at Shanghai International Studies University. It is one of China's Top 100 Book Publishers and was recognized as an “Outstanding Publishing House” in 2011 China Publish Government Award appraisal. Among the accolades it has garnered are the National Advanced Collective of Textbook Management, the National Outstanding University Press, the National Advanced Collective of Textbook Compilation, the Shanghai Model Collective and the National Copyright Model Unit. In the annual assessment of social benefits of book publishing units, SFLEP has repeatedly been rated as "outstanding". In 2022, SFLEP won the Silver Award in Hongkou District Chief's Quality Award appraisal. 

SFLEP has made remarkable achievements not only in traditional publishing field, but also in digital publishing and cultural services, dedicated to the publication of foreign language textbooks, monographs, dictionaries, references, readers, books on Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese culture and applied foreign languages, as well as scholarly journals and digital publications. By now, more than 10,000 titles in over 40 languages have been published, with a total print run exceeding 1 billion copies. All in all, over 70% of SFLEP’s well-received publications have been reprinted. 

SFLEP boasts hundreds of national-level planned textbooks and a host of publications and projects receiving numerous awards and grants, including the China Publishing Government Award, the China Book Award, the National Excellent Textbook Award, the National Dictionary Award, the National Teaching Achievement Award, the National Publishing Fund, etc. Foreign Language World, a scholarly journal of international renown published by SFLEP, has been awarded “China’s Most Internationally Influential Academic Journal” by China National Knowledge Infrastructure (www.cnki.net) for many years running. 

SFLEP has vigorously promoted integrated publishing in recent years, launching an audio mobile learning application and an online platform for foreign language teaching and learning, which were respectively listed in the 2019 and 2020 Selection and Recommendation Scheme of Excellent Digital Publications by the State Press and Publication Administration. SFLEP has been designated as a “Model of Digital Publishing Transformation” by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. 

SFLEP attaches great importance to international communications. It has established partnerships with more than 100 publishers around the world, and maintained regular contacts with over 40 of them. It brings in high-quality publications in various forms from abroad while actively introduces its own publications to international readers to “have China’s voice heard” globally. In 2023, SFLEP was awarded "National Copyright Influential Enterprise" by the National Copyright Association. 

SFLEP remains true to its original founding mission and shows firm determination to produce first-class publications. It rides on the trend of the times and is embarking on a path of actively cultivating new quality productive forces in a bid to boost high-quality development of China’s publishing industry and build China a great publishing power.
